View Full Version : trying to erase ME and install WIN 98

I recently bought a used Compaq laptop from Ebay which was
said to have no OS. I purchased a new Win 98 os (which
someone recommended) to install. The laptop came with
part of WIN ME installed (i guess so I could get drivers
or whatever). There is not enough (no serial #, etc) to
install the ME, and I cannot uninstall it using add/remove
programs cuz it does not appear there. The WIN 98 will
not let me install, saying there is a more current version
already on the unit, and it says I need to get WIN 98
upgrade. Is there a way to get rid of the WIN ME
completely?

Thanks in advance.

The first thing you had better do is check with Compaq and make sure it is
OK to install W98 to the laptop and that W98 drivers are available for the
hardware. Laptops do not always work well with retail versions of W98 and
physical damage is possible.

To get rid of ME, format the partition.

I'm curious about what kind of physical damage can be done by loading W98 on
some computers. Can you give an example of how that might happen? Thanks.

I don't recall the specifics but MVP Bill Starbuck loaded a retail version
of Windows to an IBM laptop and physical damage resulted. Bill, if you see
this, please respond.
