Hi,
I am Wondering if anybody knows how to get rid of the
error Cannot find device file that maybe needed to run
windows or a windows application. The windows registry or
system.ini file............

and ends up with
c:\windows\system

There is no mention of the actual file at fault what so
ever and I have looked on the internet for this error and
in all instances there is always a file name at the bottom
of the error, this one doesn't. It does not affect the
running of the pc what so ever but is very annoying when
you consdider I will have to clone from this machine and
it has taken hours to get it setup with all the software.
Can somebody please tell me how to either correct the
problem or just to get windows boot up to bypass it so you
don't have to hit a key everytime.

Did you remove any software before that started happening.
Ifso, try reinstalling it and then removing it using the
custom removal, if available when running Add/Remove
Programs.

I would try using the scanreg /restore command at the DOS
prompt by booting to the command line by pressing the F8
key before Windows starts loading.

Restore a CAB file containing the system files that
predates the problem.

Alternatively choose the option from that boot menu that
creates a bootlog.txt file and then open it and look at
the failures.

And then enter regedit in the Start => Run box and use the
Edit => Find option to look for references to them. The
loading reference will be in one of the system files but
the unnamed file is missing.

Take care when editing the Registry.

You can create the batch file on this page that allows you
to back-up and restore the system files from the DOS
prompt:

You might be able to find the problem if you can pin point where in the
start up points it is emanating from. Use this technique:
