When my windows 98 computer boots it will only come up in
Safe Mode. What can I do to get it to boot properly?

SAFE MODE is not the normal mode of operation. Something
is wrong.

I am not sure what you mean when you say the compter
always starts in safe mode. SAFE MODE is certainly not
the normal mode of startup for any of my computers. In
this case when I try to start my Windows 98 computer, I
get an error message that tells me there are some missing
drivers and because of this the computer is starting in
SAFE MODE. If I click OK on this message box, the
computer proceeds to a VERY SLOW start up, and when
finished booting, the screen is different than normal
(icons larger and colors not clear). Some of the
features such as internet connection does not work. I am
sure there is some procedure to correct this problem, but
I do not know enough to resolve it. I hope someone can
advise me on how to get the computer start up back to
normal.

Read the articles that I referred you to--they both deal with safe mode

Ron,
I tried the recommendations from the article and this did
not fix the problem. Here is additional information to
explain the problem I am having:

When I start the computer, the first thing that appears
on the screen is a blue error message box with this
message, "Fatal exception OD has occurred
2067:00000316." If I then press CTRL-ALT-DELETE, the
computer will proceed to boot (very slowly) always in
SAFE MODE.
After booting, if I go to My Computer, it shows there are
two floppy drives (A & B) but no CD ROM drive(although
the computer does have a CD ROM. On suggestion of a
computer savy friend, I tried disconnecting the CD ROM
drive, restarting the computer, and then repeating this
process with the drive connected. With the CD ROM drive
disconnected, the computer showed only one floppy drive.
However, this did not fix the problem.

Thank you for your help!

The CDRom drive is not recognized in Windows in safe mode unless you load
special drivers for it. I don't know why two floppy drives are being
reflected (you might want to check the BIOS settings) or why one disappears
when you unhook the CDRom drive--I see no logical connection between the
two. Are there any indications of problems in control panel, system, device
manager?

Fatal exception errors can be a bear to fix--take a look at this article:

What Are Fatal Exception Errors
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=150314

What I would do is look to see if there is a program being started at boot
that is causing the fatal exception using this technique:

Ron,
Thanks, I will try that. In the meantime, here is
another bit of information.
Since I wrote the previous note, I tried the fix in the
second article, which was to remove the BootSafe=1 line
from the msdos.sys file. When I went to the Msdos.sys
file it did not contain that line. Here are the lines
contained in the Msdos.sys file:

BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.2222
The following lines are required for compatability with
other programs do not remove them.

Following the last statement above is a series of lines
with nothing but "x"'s.

Any thoughts related to this?

Thanks again!
Charles
