A client of mine told me she lost MS word files that she
saved in the history folder. Is it possible to save word
files in history folder? This is on Windows 98 second
edition.

It's possible. History is simply a folder like any other. I don't know for
certain that normal "Clear History", or even automatic deletions based upon
settings for how long to keep History, would also delete the file, but it
seems reasonable to assume so.

Hi Justin,

No, the history folder stores shortcuts to the files accessed
previously.

Yeah, looking at it, I have to wonder how she *could* save the Word file
there, but if she did, I suspect it's reasonable to assume it was deleted...
or hidden?

I just used Command Prompt to copy a test file into the History folder. It's
there, but does not show in Windows Explorer.

To the OP, suggest you use DOS Prompt to look for the file, and if found,
move it elsewhere.

Hi Gary,

Inside the Windows shell, files cannot be moved to or saved
to the history folder. Displaying hidden files and folder, the history
folder does not show up in the "Save as" dialog box. So she is
mistaken.

I would suggest she use Find - Files and folder to search for the missing
file.

I realize that under normal circumstances she shouldn't be able to save to
that folder, not under recent versions of IE, anyway. But if some odd thing
was going on that permitted it to occur...?

In any case, I'd search for it by using Command prompt.

C:
DIR /s {filename.ext}

or
DIR /s *.doc
