HELP.

Foolishly, it seems, I tried to re-install Windows 98 (without first
uninstalling) as I was having a few problems. Now I've got more! Although
the install seemed to go OK, at the very end a message came up saying that
the installation had encountered problems and was restoring a previous
"good" version. - NOT SO!

1. When I open windows Explorer it shows directory structure in left hand
pane - but no files in right hand pane. I know the files are still of as I
can open items using Word, Excel etc.
2. Even when I go into Settings/Control Panel no icons show.

Also - not exactly a "display" problem but I uninstalled Norton Internet
Security before attempting my Windows re-install & no can't get Norton to
re-install either.

1. In Explorer, do you have details set as the view? If so, left click in
the Explorer's right panel. Press Control and the plus (+) in the numeric
keypad (right side of keyboard).

2. Do a find on: *.cpl and double click each one. Does a
screen appear for each one? If not replace the file with a fresh copy from
your W98 CD.

Ron,

1. Appologies for the double post.

2. Tried your suggestions but all *.cpl files were working apart from
DS1.cpl (in Windows\options\cabs & Windows\system), PTCTRL.cpl (in
W\options\cabs) & Adpanel.cpl (in W\system) - couldn't find these on W98 CD.

However - I did solve the problem (almost accidentally) when I unticked the
"view: As Web page" setting (which I have always used previously).
This does however seem to link to another problem which I am also having
insofar as some web pages display perfectly well & I can sign into secure
sites with passwords etc. but on a couple of sites that I have visited the
details on the sign in page do not appear at all & so I cannot get into the
site. Any ideas on this one?

Many thanks

Alan
