View Full Version : Drive naming

bobster

Some time in the distant past, I was able to add names (Master, Slave) to
my C drive and D drive icons in "my computer". I now have quite a few
additional drives, E thru I and would like to be able to add a name to each
of them. I've forgotten how I did it for C and D. When I right click on
the unnamed drives, there is no "rename" option. Nothing in "properties" or
any other option seems to support renaming.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? I know it's rather trivial, but I like
to have my computer the way I want it.

Windows 98 gold, PII 300 MHz

Thanks in advance

This is termed as label. Usual naming method is purpose of the partition.
Not physical location on ide bus.

Right click a drive in Windows Explorer and get properties. You can
change the Label there. It will not change the drive letter.

You will end up with Master (C) etc.

Bill,

I've tried that before with no success. It only works for drives C and D,
my two hard drives. For all other drives A,E,G,H,I the "label" box on the
general tab of "properties" is greyed-out. Although there is a blinking
cursor, it will not accept inputs from the keyboard. Any other ideas will
be appreciated,

Thanx

What are the natures of these drives? You can't label removable media =

Gary,

My "A" is floppy drive, "E" is a Nero Image drive, my "H" is a CD/DVD
drive, my "G" is a TDK CD burner drive, and my "I" is an SD camera card
reader. Only the card reader is a removable drive.

Of course, the "A" was already labeled "3 1/2 inch Floppy" and I have been
able to label the "C" and "D". I would like to label the "E", "G", and "H"
drives but they (along with the "I" which is OK being unlabeled) are the
ones which are greyed-out. This is probably a trivial problem but it bugs
me that I can't label them.

TIA for any further suggestions

Gary,

Thanks for a very complete explanation of the labeling question. I have
noticed that when I put a CD or DVD into one of my drives, a temporary
identifier appears thus labeling the drive for its specific content at that
time. Makes sense although it sure would be nice to additionally have a
permanent label (TDK Burner, CD/DVD, etc rather than just "E", "H", etc.).
Guess I'd never thought of internally mounted CD and DVD drives as
"removable" media but as you say, its the media (the disks), not the
physical hardware that counts. I learned something new!

Open My Computer

[You can actually right-click on the "My Computer" icon
and rename it to the name of your choice, if you like]

Minimize the window so that you can see part of the Desktop.

Right-click on each disk icon in 'My Computer' and
drag-and-drop it on the Desktop, creating a shortcut to each drive.

You can then rename those Desktop shortcuts to suit yourself,
and you will now also save the extra step of having to open up
My Computer to access a drive.

Hugh,

Yes, you can right-click a drive icon on "My Computer" and click on "Create
Shortcut", creating an icon on the desktop. As you say, renaming is then
possible but dragging and dropping the renamed icon back to the "My
computer" page doesn't seem to be permitted. Thus, my desire to have the
drives labeled on the "My Computer" page doesn't seem to be possible.
However, having a properly labeled shortcut on my desktop is very helpful
and, as you said, perhaps even more efficient. Thanks for the suggestion.
