View Full Version : Can no longer format CD-R/W disks with InCD

Hello & thanks for reading,

Using Windows ME, a "Pine" 24X10X40 burner, Nero InCD v3.5.24.0.

I've been using these for years with no problems. It's something I must have
done. Here's the deal: Any unformatted CD-RW disks I insert, I cannot format
using InCD. These are disks that used to work and are from the same batch
that worked earlier. They are "Staples" 74 min/650MB/1x - 4x, they used to
work fine in my system. The burner, and InCD, can access and use (i.e. read
from, write to, erase) previously formatted CD-RW's. When I insert an unused
CD-R/W disk, I receive one or the other of these InCD error codes:
"0051-0003-0064-00c0" or "0051-0005-0072-0003". The message accompanying
these goes something like "disk error occurred, media may be damaged,
restart computer and try again". I have tried again and have tried more,
unformatted disks with no success. I've searched "Google" and "User Groups".
Nothing. I apologize if this is off topic, but this is a very knowledgeable
and helpful group. What am I missing or where should I be looking? The Ahead
Web Page is no help.

Thanks in advance!

John, if your burner still reads, writes and erases previously formatted
Disks, then try a different Brand. It could be that as the burner gets older
it has a harder time working with cheaper disks.

Thanks for the info, Rich.

Here's a twist. A CD-R-W I've been using for a backup disk is recognized and
is readable. However, I cannot delete files from it or add files to it! I've
been using Staples CD-R/W and HP CD-R/W disks. What I'm going to try next is
perform a complete uninstall of InCD using the utility from the Ahead Web
Page. I'll then reinstall version 3.5.24.0 of InCD as it "used" to work for
me. I also performed a complete Registry search and removal of any Adaptec
or Roxio stuff. That did not seem to help. I still cannot figure how, when,
or why this happened! Maybe I should remove all of Nero and InCD and give
Roxio a try? Always something! ;-)

Thanks again, and I'll let you know how I make out!

I've

I had this with one particular - good but aging - CDRW disc (and InCD).
Whenever it happened I'd copy the files to the HD and was then able to
format the disc and burn to it again. However, the problem occurred with
increasing frequency until I binned the disc.

Hello all,

OK, I'm stumped, really stumped. I've managed to pull out of a lot of
Windows ME "nose dives", but this one is different. Here's what I've tried
so far, with no results:

1) Completely uninstalled both Nero and InCD.
2) Hunted down every instance of both Adaptec and Roxio in the registry and
deleted them (...there were a bunch!).
3) Reinstalled the OEM Nero and InCD that came with the CD-R/RW drive
(...the drive is a "Pine" 24x10x40).
4) Bought some NEW Sony 1x2x4 CD-RW's.
5) Tried to format one with InCD - Didn't work. Got error code
0051-0003-0064-00c0
6) Updated both Nero and InCD to the last version updates I once had been
using successfully - Didn't work, same error.
7) Put in a previously formatted CD-RW and it is recognized, but I can
neither add to it nor delete from it.
8) Big whoop, I can still record CD-R's. At least Nero seems to be working
as before. It's just that InCD is acting up.

Any help/suggestions would again be much appreciated, even if to say "trash
that Pine drive and get something with a "brand name""! Would switching over
to Roxio have it's share of glitches? I'm just puzzled as to what happened
to cause all this and that I cannot seem to undo it. Somehow, I must have
shot myself in the foot! Ouch!

Again, thanks for reading. If this is getting off topic, I apologize in
advance and will stop all further inquires if so requested.

Not sure what Nero version you're on. Not that it should matter except in
that whichever, you can probably still get a free update to a later build.
This is advisable as it has become a significantly more stable product over
the years. Obviously you're not using Nero 6, but with luck you are using
Nero 5.5. If so you can update for free to Nero551056, but anyway look here:
http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up_vor.php for what you can update to.

More importantly perhaps though is that you can update for free to the very
latest version of InCD. Take a look here:
http://www.nero.com/en/update.php?pak=5

InCD, much more than Nero, has benefitted from continual development. If you
are having issues then you really want to be using the latest build.

Don't know about that, Noel. It works perfectly well on mine. But, as 4303
was followed within days (on Sept. 17) by 4305, I would guess the latter is
a bug-fix. I'd look it up, but I'm just killing time before hitting the
Train Station and I think I ought to go now!

Hello (yet) again,

I've tried them all: updates, uninstalls, registry searches, fresh installs,
etc.,... you name it. The CD-R/W disks still cannot be reformatted, and
occasionally the previous ones cannot be added to or subtracted from. I did
get the Nero 5.5.10.56 and it worked fine as far as CD-R's are concerned. I
believe InCD 3.5.24.0 is the last of version 3 and that's what "used" to
work well for me. I tried version 4 of InCD and that brought on a whole new
set of problems, so I removed it completely and went back to struggling with
3.5.24.0. It's got to be something really simple that I'm missing, like a
registry key entry or something similar. I'm NOT a quitter, but I've got to
give it a rest. I don't want to burden anyone else with this problem. I was
hoping someone out there had "been there, done that" and had a good idea
from first hand experience. When I get this solved, hopefully with a little
more help, I'll tell the world! Actually, I did find one or two others who
had the exact same problem using Google. There were no answers for them
either. So, I'm number three! My last resort, and it may not be so bad or
expensive, is to dump this Pine (...Mitsumi?) 24x10x40 burner and replace it
with some "brand" name. But who knows, Nero may still refuse to work! Oh,
the HUMANITY! ;-)

Thanks again, and I'll "keep my stick on the ice."

Thank you, Shane!

The help was useful and informative and appreciated! If anything else comes
to mind, please let me know. One thing I haven't tried is getting compressed
air and blowing out the CD-R/W drive. Maybe, unplugging it and letting
Windows re-recognize it and then reinstalling Nero would help. I'll try
anything and have not given up. Such a relatively small problem, but
sometimes those are the most difficult to solve!

Thanks again! If anything comes to mind, I'm all ears!

PROBLEM SOLVED... ...PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

It turned out to be the simplest cure: run one of those CD lens cleaner
discs in the drive. We had one in the house that was probably close to ten
years old and we also had plenty of liquid in the little bottle that came
with it. I had nothing to lose. I ran it through the drive per the
instructions. That did the trick. I can now format, read, write, add, delete
to CD-R/W disks. Well, most of them. This "Pine" drive seems to like the
"Staples" brand CD-R/W disk, it spits out Sony's. I can live with that. I
make it a point to periodically chuck CD-R/W disks I've used for a while,
mostly the back-up ones. Also, the older version of InCD works all the time
where as the newer 3.5.24.0 version does not. For me at least. So, that's my
story. Hope this helps someone else out. Never give up! Thanks again!

Super!! And I remember now that I had problems with CD's that were *gold*.
Blue and silver recording sides work fine with this Samsung CD-RW......but
not gold, as in *Kodak gold*.

Took me forever to figure it out as well.....so glad to hear your good
news!!
