View Full Version : Alternative method of emptying the TIF folder.

Hi,

We've been advised that deleting Temporary Internet Files (TIF's) manually
(directly) from C:\WINDOWS is a no-no. "Internet Options" should be used
instead.

I'm using a nifty little free program "Emptemp" which, with one click can
simultaneously empty a number of folders (including TIF folder). Is this
method approved by the MVP crew?

Thank you.

Not by me. Use the recommended method, allowing IE to work as programmed
making your surfing quicker and more efficient.

"Manual" deletion of TIF-related *folders* should only be done when
corruption is indicated: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree

Would depend on how it does it. The easiest (though by no means conclusive)
test is to run it, then copy the CONTENT.IE5\Index.dat file to somewhere
else (probably have to use DOS command to find it, though I'm in XP and it
may vary.). Open it in Notepad. Are most of the records zeroed out? Most of
the lines will have these characters repeated over and over and over again:
ð- ð-

If so, that would indicate that the app simply "pushed the button for you".

On the other hand, your description implies that the app also empties the
TEMP folder, and you should know that before doing that you should reboot
(unless you just did) and scan your wetware for recent problems that may
have left useful files in the TEMP folder--timed backups (did you recently
lose a document due to a crash?), debug info (are you having problems that
might lead you to a tech support person who might want these logs?). Or any
just plain "lost" files.

Sorry, there should be some little boxes representing I'm not sure what
character (my custom script for determining such things has gone AWOL)--two
of them following each hyphen in that repeated string mentioned below.

Thank you, gentlemen.

After running the Emptemp program, I opened Index.dat in Notepad (Wordpad,
actually). There is one section completely filled (edge to edge) with
"little boxes", but with the odd intelligible word here and there.
The vast majority of the pages consist of lines beginning with one ð symbol,
no hyphen, followed by totally blank. Does this indicate that the program
is having the same effect as using the Internet Options route?

I *have* chosen to use the program to empty the Temp folder as well as the
TIF folder (plus Cookies, History and Recent). All with one click........
but I always ensure that I have re-booted beforehand, ( the things we learn
from you people ........).

I am not, currently, experiencing any problems. I run AdAware and Spybot
regularly.

You mentioned, Gary, "....scan your wetware....". What is "wetware"?

Thanks again for your interest.

Isn't the same result as using the button in IE Settings, but it isn't the
same as what happens when you simply delete all the files in Windows
Explorer, either. This last method leaves entries for all the URLs--known in
CacheSentry lingo as "Stray Entries" as opposed to "Stray Files (files in
the TIF with no corresponding entry in Index.dat.
I suppose if you aren't experiencing any problems. that's a good sign.

As for the rest, I see no inherent problems, either.

"Wetware" -- That organic gray matter that provides a platform for human
intelligence. Usually found between a the ears, though most humans also tend
to think with organs located significantly farther to the south.

Gary!

Your definition of "wetware" has made my day. As I said before......The
things we learn from you people.........

In gratitude.

Too many clicks, and too few folders.

I noted this comment about Disk Cleanup on 16 Feb 2003:

Disk Cleanup can't even handle sub-folders in the TEMP folder.
As a disk cleaner it simply isn't.

If you want a real cleaner, try Empty Temp Folders (freeware):

Pete's comment may have gotten some people off on to EmpTemp.

I don't use either program, as I prefer to be more specific
when doing cleanup.
