View Full Version : Hidden Files

The number of hidden files shown following a scan of my
hard drive keeps increasing. Even after going to the
control panel and putting a check in the radial to allow
hidden files to be shown, I still am unable to reduce the
inexorable increase.

I understand that the hidden files may be located in the
Index.dat file in the ContentIE5 folder. Can this folder
be safely removed? Is there any reason to? Why the secrecy?

Thanks for your help.

What is doing the scan ?

Not at all sure what you are doing in the control panel. What is "radial" ?

Go to control panel, click Internet Options and the click Delete Files and
select the Off Line COntent radio button.

What are the names of these files ?

To ind out, open a MSDOS Wwindow and enter:
Dir c:\*.* /s /AH > C;hidden.txt and view that text file.

Scan: Start/ Accessories/System Tools/ScanDisk
Control Panel: Start/Settings/Control Panel/View/Folder
Options/View/ Hidden files/Show all files.

Radial: On the View tab, click the radial button
labeled "Show hidden files or folders."

Names of files: Hard to say, since I cannot find them.
They are "hidden" files. I understand email and site
addresses, for example, may be retrieved if access is
gainged to the hidden files. I have read that Microsoft
put the hidden files in the index.dat file, which is found
in the temporary files/content.ie5 folder.

AH! OK. Radio I think not Radial.

Hidden files exist all over the place.

OPen a DOS window (or boot to the command line) and enter
DIR C:\*.* /s /AH > C:\hidden.txt and that will list all hidden files and
put the list in C:\hidden.txt.

You can then view that file.

With respect to the Index.dat file's, see the following;

http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=Products&p=index.datsuite

Will deleting the index.dat files, harm my PC?

NB: Watch for line wrap in the above URL's

Since the OP is talking about the content.ie5 folder, the correct DOS
command would be;

cd c:\windows\tempor~1\content.ie5
dir *.* /s /ASH > c:\hidden.txt

"ASH" as the content.ie5 folder is set by Windows as a System folder and
thus, most of it's contents are set as the same thing.

In saying this, one can also view them in Windows itself by entering the
path into Explorer's address bar.

Hate to disagree but...

Reread his postings.

OP was concerned that Scandisk was reporting many hidden files but he didn't
know where they were. He says he had heard ...the IE content ... etc.

That is a small part of the system.

The DOS DIR command I gave will show ALL HIDDEN FILES in the system and not
restrict him to the IE stuff

He should really probably clean up his IE temp and off-line content files.

My apologies, I saw the following and stupidly made an assumption;

Easy steps to clean your computer.

Right click My Computer, left Explore,
left on +C, left on +Windows, clean out
Applog, Cookies, Temp, and Temporary
Internet Files. Also Temporary open
Content.IE5 file and delete everything
but the index.dat. Right click on Task bar,
left on Properties, Start Menu Programs
and clear.
Now go Start, Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, and Maintenance Wizard.

Or download and use this tool I realy like it.
Get GeoDisk
http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software.htm
Hope this helps.
