I can't get win98 to start even in safe mode because it
says "Invalid page fault at explorer.exe ..."
At the C:\windows directory I see an explorer.exe file
with 180,224 bytes. When I try to edit the file or rename
it the computer says "File not found". I can find every
other file that I see in the windows directory. Does
anyone have any idea why I can see the file in the
directory but yet the computer claims it doesn't exist?
thanks

Why would you try to edit the file ?

You are using DOS ?

Isn't that a SYSTEM and HIDDEN file ?

You can't edit Explorer.EXE. See here for a procedure to track down problems

>.hi again, thanks for the questions. I was only trying to
edit the explorer.exe file because of a online solution i
was trying to implement. The file is a system file but not
hidden. I am working in DOS because that is the only thing
besides the A drive that is working. No windows in any
mode or the cd-rom drive won't respond. I finally found a
missing extension and I was able to edit and replace
explorer.exe with one from another computer, but it didn't
help. When I deleted that game I must of also deleted a
critical system file, but I have no idea which one. You
got me to thinking it had to be that when you asked me
what extra programs I had deleted with the game. When I
control, alt, del at my only windows screen where it
says "explorer has performed an illegal operation" I get
the task manager screen that only indicates that "msgloop"
and "msg32" are the only programs running in the
background. There used to be several more like
explorer, systray, rnaapp, etc.,but they are all gone now.

The only effective way of "editing" EXPLORER.EXE would
by altering the source code and recompiling it. Exactly
what are you trying to do?
