View Full Version : WinME ICS Can't configure Client to connect...

I have two computers networked together, both are running Windows ME.
The Host has a modem and an internet connection (dial-up), the Client
does not have a modem. They are connected with a orange category 5e
crossover cable. Everything in the network works, I have access to all
the files, folders and programs in both computers from either computer,
I can print from either computer, etc.
I can (and have) run the internet sharing wizard on the Host - it sets
up that one OK. When I go to the Client and DC on the internet sharing
wizard and click next it says No Network Adapter Was Detcted so thats as
far as gets. When I do the troubleshooter I get Troubleshooter detected
that DHCP isn't turned on. It says to put the ME disk in (My Computer),
DC Tools, DC Mtsutil, DC ICS, RC Dhcp-on then Install. When I DC Tools
there is no Mtsutil file, so thats as far as I get. Then I have to undo
the ICS wizard in the Host to make that dial-up work again (otherwise it
connects then stalls after 15 or 20 seconds).

Is there any way to make this work? I guess my other option is to
install a $30 modem in the Client and share the phone line - I hate to
spend the money if I don't have to, pluss having to mess with the phone
line.

Stop! Right there! You are done! There is nothing else to set up with ICS.

Stop! Right there! Go back a step. You don't run ICS on the client computer;
there is no connection to share! With ICS running on the host, the client
should find the Internet.

Do this:

Run ICS on the host computer only. When it says that it is done, dial a
connection. Go to Start > Run, and type "winipcfg", then press the "Enter"
key. When you get the window, click on the "More Info >>" button. Right
click on the title bar, where it says, "IP Configuration" after the blue
question mark. Paste into Notepad, a reply to this message, whatever. The
result should be similar to this (not identical though; this is the only
printout I got on my ICS connection; I have since installed a router, which
changes things):

You should see at least two "Ethernet adapter" lines. One for the Internet
connected modem, another for the LAN card to the client. There should be IP
addresses on those two. The printout above is for the client on an ICS
connection. IP address 192.168.0.1 is the LAN adapter in the host computer.
I don't know what the host printout should look like, but I would expect to
see a public IP address, and DNS server IP addresses on the PPP Adapter.

DHCP, like ICS, should not be running on the client computer. DHCP hands out
the IP address to the client computer; 192.168.0.2 was given to
"MEGUMI.mshome.net" by the host computer.
