i want to defrag my hard disk. when i run defrag it says
errors are on disk so run scandisk. when i try to run
scandisk it fails. Errors and then the machine locks up.
I guess I need another copy of scandisk. Tried to go via
MS website - nothing, tried help line, nothing. I have my
Win98 disk I PAID FOR, but how do I reload scandisk, or
get another copy or anything!!

Your hard drive is probably going, and you have something interrupting
scandisk's operation as well.

Think I would first download the disk diagnostic from your diak mfgr's web
site and run the non-destructive tests.

If that is OK, boot from your StartUp floppy (that's the one Windows
suggested you make and keep the first time you ran Winows) and run scandisk
from that floppy and include the thorough test.

I've got the startup disk, and while it's booting, but
before windows tries to start, I hold control key to get
the startup options. I select safe mode, and it
eventually settles down at the A> prompt. What do I do
now to run scandisk please?

Hi Dave,

Weather you boot with Startup Disk or boot to the command
prompt via the ctrl key, at the A:\> prompt type Scandisk C:
then press enter.
