Problems with Windows Update

I'm trying to run Windows Update - but it hangs after the
download step and before install.

I tried the troubleshooter following the instructions to
re-register several items - three work fine and one fails -
"mssscript.ocx". I don't appear to have this file on my
system.

How can I acquire it?

Or, does anyone have a better idea for fixing the problem?

Look for a folder called wutemp or similar name
Delete this folder

Don't delete folder. Just delete everything inside each of the
folders

c:\windows\temp
c:\windows\msdownload.tmp

The later one may not exist.

Delete the cookies in c:\windows\cookies

Try running windows update again.

That file is for NT based systems, no wonder you don't have
it to start with. Try installing DCOM98 and then the
Windows Scripting Host package.

I tried your solution first, Greg - no dice - only thing
is that the delete cookie part failed and I don't have the
strength to deal with the aftermath of deleting them
manually just now. I already have performance issues, I
don't need any more.

Go to macromedia.com
Get free flash player. Less the 2 minutes
Reboot.
Try it again.
Say yes if windows update ask you to install active x control.
It may ask you twice.

I got a happy ending on this one - switched to IE as
browser rather than AOL browser and it worked. Don't quite
know why AOL didn't work - it has worked in the past for
WindowsUpdate - but that least I got my updates.

AOL and Netscape are both well known to NOT work at WinUP
site. That info should be found at the troubleshooter
site. The workaround for 98 is to use the Start|Settings|
Windows Update shortcut to launch ie even if you have the
AOL browser or Netscape running usually. Sorry you went
though so much trouble.
