Hub, or switch? Cable type? NIC-to-NIC cable has to be cross over; and that
won't work about 1% of the time. Just often enough to remember that the
cross over cable was never intended for direct connection of two computers.

Browse master may be an issue; I think that Windows 2K wants to be the
browser master; maybe you can try turning it off in the Windows ME computer.
It is in the Properties for "File and printer sharing for Microsoft
Networks.

Okay. First step would be to turn on power to the Windows 2K computer first,
and run it for about 15 minutes; then turn on power to the Windows ME
computer, and wait another 15 minutes. Now try to browse the LAN. If that
seems to cure the problem, then "Browse master" is the issue.

It might be possible to force the computer which is on most often to be the
browse master, and force the other computer's browse master setting off. It
might also be possible to force the Win2K to be browser master right from
the boot, and it is definitely possible to prevent the WinME computer from
becoming the browse master.

And I could be all wet, too. I don't have that combination of computers, so
I can't run any personal tests to see if my idea matches reality.
