windows explorer

When I open windows explorer,the left pane is blank,the
right pane has icons in it,the left pane has an X at the
top right corner,if you click on the X then the right pane
expands full size,can anyone help me with this problem?

Repairing IE (Add/Remove Programs) will almost always fix this Windows
Explorer.exe problem. See "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool"

and run "Repair" on Internet Explorer.
