View Full Version : 2 beeps on POST

I've posted previously with this, but I'm working on a
friend's computer (messed up w/ malware & other
problems). Had to reinstall OS, also cleaned it, then on
restart had 2 beeps. Posted reply said I might have
unseated the RAM or video card. I checked them and
managed to fix problem. Trying to work on
software/Internet issues, did a restart and - 2 beeps
again! Reseating RAM, cards, etc.; now I sometimes get
single beep (but it freezes at Windows screen) or double
beep (where it doesn't get past the Dell screen). Please
help! Is it possible for a virus to interfere with the
POST test?? Any solutions out there??

Might be a flaky RAM chip.

Hi Barb,
It does sound as though it may be bad RAM. Download and run either of these
(or both). They are free:
Free memory testers:
http://www.memtest86.com/
and
DocMemory from:
http://www.simmtester.com/

You may want to run them overnight. These aren't 100% accurate, but a good
place to start.
HTH,

You need to find out what motherboard you have and the BOIS software before
anybody can say what the 2 POST beeps are , check out the boot up screen to
see what version /type you have.

Each BIOS software has it's own individual beep codes ,especially any
proprietary brand computers like DELL.

In normal circumstances , 1 beep means that the POST is successful.

Check to see if there are 2 sticks of Ram in the Ram slots , if so , swap
them around , you could be getting an error on the first 64 Kb of memory.

Here is a web page for beep codes.

Hi Curt,
Tues night here, I downloaded the memtest86 to a floppy
and tried to run it. I can't just put it in, 'cuz it
just does 2-beeps. So I tried checking out the Setup
(and here the memory supposedly checked out OK, but then
there was a message after all the initial
testing: "ERROR - Resource conflict - PCI Network
Controller - Bus: 00, Device 11, Function:00"). Can you
help me with this info? Anyway, I tried a bootup disk,
and tried to get the floppy to run the memtest, but I
can't. How do I run it??? Help!!

Mon night - replaced the SDRAM stick with another Dell
memory (older) stick I had. No 2-beeps, but there was
some kind of error message with the initial testing
screen, which I attribute to the older stick.

Trying to work with the memory tester programs as follows:
Tues night here, I downloaded the memtest86 to a floppy
