Since the 18th August each time I go into Windows Update i
am being told to download a critical update. This I have
done on every occassion and have been told at all times
that the download has been successfull. Why then do I
keep getting the same message.

Mel,

Since you haven't provided which update you're attempting to
download it makes it difficult to assist you. You could try
downloading and saving it to your Hard Drive and then reinstalling
it with your antivirus software temporarily disabled and IE closed:

KB837009 is available from here
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-013.mspx
for Outlook Express 5.5 Service Pack 2 . This is the one aimed at
Win ME. I don't understand which version you're currently using.
Please be more lucid ...
