Trouble with font display in Windows ME Help

We have a Compaq computer with Windows ME. For months now
anywhere there's a capitol 'W' part of the upper left hand
corner of the w has been missing, the font in use being
Times New Roman. We haven't had this problem in Word
Docs, but we have in many other places such as with titles
to docs or folders the capitol 'W' has had the corner
missing. Also for months now when we click on Help and go
to the Help and Support program, there's an index where
you type in what you're looking for and it finds it
faster, when we scroll down this index there will be
single lines that are signs instead of lettering. Here is
what is seen in place of whatever it is supposed to say: a
square, a plus sign, and z with a "short sound" symbol
above it, another square, and then a @ symbol... and some
repetitions. These are always seen under a subject as an
indented first choice.

My wife changed the desktop font to a different font
because she liked the other font better, and we discovered
that there are no more messed up w's anywhere on the
desktop nor other items where the font could be changed.

But even after the font changes, the problem is still the
same in the Help and Support center index. Is there some
way to change the font in such a program? We don't want to
try our Compaq rescue disk to see if a reinstall or repair
would help because it wipes out other programs we've
installed, some we downloaded from the Internet and have
no access to recoup if lost. Thanks for any suggestions
you might have.

Seems to be a 'Feature' of Times New Roman - just learned to live with thru'
9x, Me and XP!!

Out of curiosity Mart can you give an example of where you are seeing
this?

Bit like buses, Mike - can't find one when you want it <g>

But IIRC, certainly remember them on the Desktop icons title font and when
highlighted would then appear 'normal' (and quite recently, too!!)

Just accepted and lived with it - but now you want an actual example - no
can do, I'm afraid. I'll contact you if/when I catch another <bg>

Thanks Mart,

OK. I've obviously never seen it as I have never used Times Roman as a
system font only ever within an application and at 600pt in WordPerfect I
can see nothing amiss. :-)

Mike, it would appear (in my case) that it is not the Times New Roman font
which gives the missing 'leading' edge of the upper case " W " but rather,
Arial font. But it * may* happen with other fonts.

One 'example' that I can readily reproduce is:-
Open a new Excel sheet and type the letter W (upper case) into a cell.
Confirm (or change to) the font is arial and re-size to 8pt. Tab out of
the cell then go back in, to edit the contents of the cell - the W has the
top of leading edge 'missing. Tab out and the W is restored.

It's happening on two different boxes here, so can't be the display (or
drivers <g>), but I've seen the same effect on 'various' desktop icon labels
(and Win OS's) over the years.

Hope you are able to replicate it.

Thanks Mart,

Arial makes far more sense although I don't think I've ever seen the
problem myself. Perhaps due to failing eye sight or because I use quite
small fonts for my desktop icons (8pt on a 1280x1024). Ah but those are
MS Sans Serif (in Win Me) [Tahoma in XP].

Excel. Can't reproduce it here Mart and zooming to 400% seems to show no
problem either.

Very peculiar. I can only assume I'm not looking at the same "thing".

Ah! Seen it! I've just created a folder on the desktop (Win Me on a
VPC), altered the font to Arial 8pt and there it is. Visible as long as
not selected, the moment you select the icon it goes back to normal.
Change back to MS Sans Serif and the problem disappears. Yes, and it also
happens in XP if I change the font to Arial from Tahoma.

Just revising my 1st post in this thread <bg> :-

Seems to be a 'Feature' of Arial 8pt (and possibly other fonts) - just
learned to live with thru' 9x, Me and XP!!
