I have a W2000 Pro machine, of which I want to share the CD
drive, so I have shared it with the sharename CD. I want
to use the drive from a WMe machine, which does not have
any users configured (so, I suppose, there is a default
user). I don't want to configure users on the Me because I
don't want anyone to have to log on.

On the Me machine, I do Tools - Map network drive, and (in
the Path box) enter the UNC name of the CD drive
(\\machinename\CD). When I click OK, I am asked for the
password for the resource - but I have not configured a
password for the resource (in fact, I don't think one can
do so). I have tried the password with which I am logged
on to the W2000 machine; I have also tried blank and space,
and I have defined a password for the Guest user of the
W2000 machine and tried that. None of them works.

So I did a NET USE from the command prompt; when asked for
a password, I tried the same ones. In each case, I get the
following message:

Error 5: You do not currently have access to this file. The
file may be
marked read-only, or it may be part of a shared resource
such as a folder, a
named pipe, a queue, or a semaphore. You can use the ATTRIB
command to change
the read-only attribute, or try again later when the file
may be available.

Note that a user on the W2000 machine IS able to use
resources on the Me machine, so there is a good connection
between them.
