View Full Version : No Sound

after reading various posts about having no sound, I
understand about rebooting in Safe mode, but if I check
the Device Manager under SAFE MODE and look for all
occurrences of "SOUND" I find about 10 different things
from the sound card its self to wave modem to game
controllers etc. In NORMAL MODE there are only 3 items
pertaining to Sound.

So should I be deleting everying (all 10 items) in SAFE
MODE then rebooting to normal mode so that WinME re-
installs my drivers for my sound cards?

If it isn`t detected, does that mean I will have to
recover my system using the recovery disk?

Thanks
Terry

Recover Disk? - I guess you must have an OEM version (not an MS retail
version) of WinMe.

Well, I can't say for certain as there are various types of recovery disk -
depending upon the OEM - but you may or may not have been supplied with a
separate set of disks for your sound card drivers. You are going to have to
consult your User Manual or even the manufacturer of you PC to determine how
or where these drivers are located.

However, you will certainly need to have the correct (WinMe) drivers for
your sound card before you commence - a bit of homework required!

But getting back to the other part of your question - as you have
multi-occurrences of drivers shown in DevMan in Safe Mode more often than
not lead to the type of problem you are seeing. And yes, you do need to
remove them all (in Safe Mode) to clear remnants of 'soup'. The fact that
you are seeing these 'extra' devices suggests that you have tried to install
or over-install updates or other sound devices at some time - which went
wrong!

Just be sure that you have a set of drivers before you start - although if
you've got no sound any way, then you don't have a lot to lose <g>
