explorer problems

[Moi]

A friends runs windows ME.
he has a illegal operation with windows explorer.
It is a constant problem where a message appears on the screen saying
windows explorer has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.
The screen then goes blank, then the icons re appear.
He runs Norton's, anti spy ware etc.
Does Microsoft know of this...obviously.........is there a fix for it, other
than a reload of his system?
