View Full Version : HP 656c reinstall drivers message

After many months of no printing problems, I received the
message "A required HP file is missing or corrupted.
Reinstall HP driver software".

After receiving the error message, I follow the
procedures, exactly, to uninstall and reinstall the
drivers. The printer, then works fine until I restart the
system. I then get the message again. I have tried
everthing I can think of including a complete scan disk. I
even replaced the disk drive with a new one. I completely
uninstalled my anti-virus software. I must have tried this
at least 30 times. I have tried to install the drivers
from my original CD and I have tried using the newest
downloaded drivers. Every time, without exception, the
printer works fine after the installation of the driver
software, then fails after the restart.

This article may help. It has lots of good troubleshooting tips.

HOW TO: Troubleshoot Printing Problems in Windows 95, Windows 98, and
Windows Millennium Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=128345

When you got a new disk drive, did you install things from scratch or did
you restore a backup? If you installed from scratch, did you install the
operating system, then the printer and test? Did it work? At what point
did it fail when you reinstalled your programs?

Clean booting will often help you determine if something loading at startup
is causing your problem.

Here is the additional information you asked for and some
that you didn't. I copied the C: drive that I replaced
using the MaxBlaster software that came with the new
drive. I thought the problem was caused by the IDE drive
not posting the data from its hardware buffer to the
actual disk. Thus the information would disappear when the
system is shut down. The results were identical with the
old and the new disk. Specifically: When I try to print
from any application (not when I install the drivers), I
get the message saying that a file required for printing
is missing or corrupted and that I need to reinstall my
dirvers. I then reinstall my dirvers (exactly according to
HP's procedure), and the printer works fine. Until I do a
restart, at which time the problem occurs all over again.

Last night I did some more expirimenting. I discovered the
exact file that somehow gets deleted. It is
windows/system/hpzpcl07.dll. The file is present after the
dirvers are installed and the printer works fine. After
any system restart (or shutdown) the file is gone and my
problem re-occurs. This is not intermittent, it happens
every time. If I copy a saved copy of the file back to
windows/system, the printer will, once again, work fine.
But the file will, once again, disappear on the next
restart. Why would just this one file get deleted every
time that I restart my system? My printer was working for
months before this started to happen. It makes no sense!!

Well, I solved the problem myself thanks in part
to "PattL"'s advice. I had also been trying to get a
solution from HP on this. Here is an excert from my last
replay to HP:

Dear HP,

I resolved the problem myself but the cause should be of
interest to you. Others may encounter this and the problem
was made worse by directions in your help file.

The problem was cased by a Trojan back door that was
placed in to my "Run" registry entry. The program
(C:\windows\aqadcup.exe) deletes your file hpzpcl07.dll
every time the system starts up. "Why" you ask. Because
when a user tries to print and this file is missing, your
software displays a message telling him to reinstall the
HP drivers. In that message is a link to instructions. In
those instructions, you specifically tell the user that he
should remove any anti virus software before the
uninstall/reinstall of your drivers. (Which I have found
to be not necessary). After the uninstall, the system must
reboot, without the virus protection. Aqadcup.exe then
runs again at start up, only this time virus protection is
gone and the program proceeds to do more damage (including
deleting regedit.exe. It also did something to my Norton
Anti Virus that required me to reinstall Norton Anti
Virus).

I believe the reason that this virus targeted your (HP's)
file is because your instructions specifically and
erroneously tell the user that he needs to remove virus
protection.

I think you should change your instructions to say that
removing the anti virus protection may be a possible cause
for a failed installation and should be attempted after
the uninstall (which involves a system restart) but before
the install (which does not involve a restart).

Also you can add this situation to your database so you
can help others better than you helped me. I can't believe
that I am the only person in the world that this has
happened to.
