My NAV2001 subscription is about to expire. I cannot renew it as the
NAV2001 was discontinued. I had some work done on my computer and was told
NAV2001 isn't good but that I cannot use NAV2004 on my computer. I use
windows ME. Is this true? I don't know what else to use.
Thanks,
Betty

Few if any domestic grade Symantec products run without problem on Win Me
(or come to that any recent operating system). NAV is one such and is
100% incompatible with Win Me's system restore - something which makes it
unique amongst AV applications. NAV2004 is without doubt worse than what
went before and IMO is best avoided.

Thanks for your reply. I am still learning so I do not know what to use in
NAV2001's place. It expires the beginning of September and know I should be
using something in its place. Your suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Betty

There are many antivirus programs available......most of them cost. There
are a couple of free ones and I can recommend AVG at www.grisoft.com

I happen to use EZ Trust.....and I believe it is about $30 US. But go to
the following website from our antivirus news group and have a good browse
thru it.....it will teach you a lot about antivirus progs, firewalls and
most importantly.....safe hex. Aka "how to avoid viruses".

http://www.claymania.com/nav-map.html

Hope this helps you learn.

Cheers.....Heather

Thanks Heather. Is there a website for EZTrust? I intended to pay for
something as I paid yearly to renew my NAV 2001. It was easy because it
came with my computer. Is the one you use, EZ Trust, compatable with my
windows ME? I will read your recommended website.

Thanks again,
Betty

http://www.my-etrust.com/ is the website for EZ Trust. I was checking the
Microsoft website and it is still offered free in combination with a
firewall. However.....the firewall is probably still version 3.xxx of Zone
Alarm and it doesn't agree with WindowsME for most of us.

EZ Trust is completely compatible with WinME.....I have used it for many
years. I prefer something that doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles and
in fact, have turned off the *scanning while downloading* aspect. But you
may wish to keep it. Until you learn more about the malware stuff.

Cheers....Heather

Thanks Heather. It's times like this I wish I really knew what I was doing.
A few times I have used trendmicro to run a one time scan. How do you know
what program is best to use. I don't want anything too complicated but I
know I should purchase something. I have several of the Dummies books but
they don't tell you much about this. I appreciate your help.

Hi Betty.....

Just keep reading these news groups......that is how I learned. Norton is
not all that good with WindowsME......and it is what is called
'bloatware'.....and their techie help is non-existent.....for starters,
grin.

Read the comparisons on the antivirus website.....but you can use AVG as it
is not complicated. I put it on my neighbour's computer after his Norton
ran out. Just don't click on attachments if you are not sure of them. And
NEVER click on an attachment that says it is from Microsoft.....they don't
send out patches that way.

Do you go to Windows Update and see if there are any ones you need? Click
on Tools/Windows Update in Internet Explorer and follow the directions.

Best.....Heather

Just as an FWIW, you can try-before-you-buy with AVG - the free version is
good, but comes with no tech support (v6) the Paid-for version is v7, and
comes with Tech Support (about which I've heard nothing either good or bad -
which is probably a comment more on how few problems the program causes than
on the quality of the tech support)

Yes....I was thinking she should do that. I also wondered if she has a
firewall and AdAware on her computer. And last, but not least......she
should totally uninstall Norton. (your favourite program, grin).

Thanks Heather and Noel. I will try it first and then if it works okay buy
the v7. I was also told trendmicro has a good antivirus program also. I do
have zone alarm installed on my computer and also use ADaware. I installed
both of them myself after reading it in a newsgroup. I do the windows
updates and I know about opening attachments and open nothing from
Microsoft. One last question - the v7, do I download that or do they send
me a physical program?
Thanks again and I will keep reading the groups.

If you elect to buy it, then it will come from your local agent (AFAIK) -
but will still probably be a download for offline install (so save it to
CD!).. I've never gone that far myself, despite having used AVG for the past
couple of years for my AV (reminder to self - pay for it soon!)
