Problem:
MS Word 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1)--running under MS Windows 98
Second Edition 4.10.2222 A (Symantec detects OS ver.
67766446, Svc Pack A) won't print anymore:
produces "problem with current printer setup" and "no
printer installed" messages. MS Excel 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1)
is doing the same, but can be "tricked" into printing by
opening Notepad, clicking File, Page Setup and Cancel. The
Notepad kludge doesn't work with Word.
Efforts Unsuccessful:
HP's online advanced diagnostics says power cable is
connected, communication between computer and product is
working, driver installation Ok, default printer Ok,
Updated Driver Ok.
Per Knowledge Base Article - 223418, I (1) reset the
registry by changing the default printer to generic and
back, (2) downloaded and installed the latest driver from
HP--more than once, (3) reinstalled the only file System
File Checker found changed, (4) found no problems with
Registry Checker.
Additional information:
On one occasion only, Word's error message window offered
a debug buton, which opened a window showing a file (whose
name I failed to record) with a line high-lighted,
containing the entry "FilePrinter 0," but I haven't been
able to get to Debug again, don't know what file it was,
or even if this was a/the problem. Sometimes, if the
above "Notepad kludge" isn't working with an Excel file,
if I reboot, the file prints (was "stuck" in queue?) as
desktop returns on my display.
Any suggestions, please?
