I upgraded from Win.98 to Win.ME and now the only color
display I have is 16 bit (slider won't even work). Has
anyone had this problem? and if so, how do I fix it? Thank
you in advance for any info. Take care :)

Try reinstalling your video drivers. It is possible that the drivers you
were using when running Win 98 are incompatible with the Win me operating
system. Check the manufacturer's web site for updated Win Me compatible
video drivers for your graphics card.

First though what does the Device Manager have to say about your video
adapter? Right Click on My Computer, Properties | Device Manager and
click the + sign alongside Display adapters.

You might want to try the following. Boot to Safe Mode, open the Device
Manager and delete all entries in the section Display adapters. Now
reboot back into Normal Mode and let Win Me redetect your video card and
see if it then installs the correct drivers.

If in the Device Manager all you are seeing is entries for Standard PCI
Graphic Adapter (VGA) it is no real surprise that you are unable to alter
your colours or resolution as you have no card specific drivers installed
but rather are using the built in default generic drivers. To resolve
this problem you need to find and install the correct drivers for your
video card. Do this by visiting the manufacturer's web site.

BTW in your initial post I see you mentioned 16 bit. If so then that
shouldn't be too much of a problem. I thought you had said 16 colour
which really is a problem.

PS I have nowhere said for you to delete ANY files, only the entries in
the Device Manager. Note though that even that is unnecessary since as
yet you apparently haven't installed any drivers for your video card and
are therefore only using the basic default VGA drivers.

PPS I don't provide support via e-mail. If you want one to one personal
support and don't want to use these newsgroups may I suggest you get your
credit card out and visit your local PC shop.

Regards,

Before you start, you may need to obtain and download the latest WinMe
driver for your Video Card (Adapter) which you should be available from the
card manufacturers web site. The existing drivers (supplied with your Win98
PC - possibly on a separate disk - *may* work OK, but you are advised to
check first and should be prepared with a later version, just in case <g>.

Boot into Safe Mode and in Device Manager, 'Remove' any/all Display Adapters
and Monitors and then re-boot.
WinMe *should* re-detect (Plug&Play) your video card and monitor and then
should install the 'correct' drivers - but note that you *may* need to offer
any Video Driver's mentioned above, if requested by the set-up wizard.

HTH and good luck

Mart
