I recently reinstalled Windows 98 in my AOpen computer.
Now there is no LPT listed under ports (COM & LPT) in
Device Manager. I have went to Add new hardware and and
added the printer port but I get yellow exclamation mark
when I finish and the printer still does not work. I have
done this several times removing the printer and the
printer port and reloading them both after shutting down
the computer and restarting it. Every time the LPT port
either does not show up or it has a yellow exclamation
mark by it and the printer never shows up in Device
Manager, even though it shows up when I click on the
Printer Icon.

Try booting into Safe mode. Then go to Device Manager and remove all
entries under ports. Also remove all entries in any category that has an
entry with a ! next to it and all entries under Other (if any). Once you
have done this exit Device Manager, say no to restarting and then Exit
Windows and shut down. Let the system sit for a few seconds and then boot
up and hopefully the port will be correctly enumerated during the boot
process.

Often some devices are not correctly recognized during a new installation
but once the system is installed, it will be recognized correctly if nothing
is conflicting with it.
