I am running 98SE with an on board soundcard. I have no
volume control on the task bar and if you go to the area
where you 'check' for it to show on the task bar, nothing
is there. The computer will play a cd through the cd
player, but there are no other computer sounds...start up
sounds, viewing media...no sound anywhere else. Because
the cd player is playing, I'm assuming the sound card is
working properly......any ideas on how to restore full
sound to the computer. I recently reformatted the hard
drive and this has caused my problem. Thanks.

I have an update to my own problem. I re-loaded windows
last night and got the sound back, BUT my dsl wouldn't
work. Ended up on the phone 4 hours with sbc trying to
get it fixed...it fixed, but now no sound again. I don't
understand ....before I reformatted the hard drive, I had
sound AND dsl...no problem. Has to be a software glitch?
