View Full Version : Explorer freezes when attached to wireless router

I just installed a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. My
wireless computer works great. I have a Windows ME
computer that is connected to the router directly to port
2 with an ethernet cable. When connecting to the internet
from the Windows ME computer, Explorer (not Internet
Explorer) seems to freeze up. If I remove the wireless
router and connect directly to my cable modem I don't have
this problem. Any ideas on what might be causing Explorer
to quit responding?

By "Explorer", but not "Internet Explorer", I will presume that you mean the
"Windows Explorer", which is the file manager program.

Windows Me computer wired to router; Windows Explorer freezes.
Windows Me computer wired direct to modem; Windows Explorer works.

I think I got it...your problem, not, necessarily, a solution.

Any firewall in place? About all that I can think of is a firewall rule
applied to Windows Explorer and the LAN IP address. When your computer is on
the LAN, the rule blocks Windows Explorer, but when the computer is direct
to the Internet, the Windows Explorer rule never kicks in because it is
never going to the LAN IP address.

That is a long shot; but also the reverse of the way that my firewall rules
are configured. I block Windows Explorer from accessing the Internet, but
permit it to access the LAN.

I am using Kerio Personal Firewall, v.2.1.5, for that.

Norman,
Yes, you understand the problem. I have Norton Internet
Security 2004, but have disabled the firewall. So I don't
think that's my problem. Thanks for the thought though!

Norton can be problematic. I don't use NIS, though, so I don't know what
really happens when it is disabled. It is odd that Windows Explorer will
freeze, assuming that the Internet Explorer works okay; they are very
interdependent, and anything affecting one should affect the other when the
firewall is out of the way.

I don't really use my file manager program for Internet access, though, so I
am out of ideas at this point.
