I am trying to do the microsoft update, usally right when
I open the update it says all the critical updates that I
am suppose to install. However the last few days it has
been just saying that it is looking for updates and never
changes, never bring up any updates. I have even left it
trying overnight, and nothing changed. HMMM is it just
me?

monique,

Open the Windows Update.log found in the Windows folder with
Notepad. Scroll down towards the bottom of the log and copy and
paste the last 20 or so lines into your next post, please.

At first I was unable to do a system restore,a defrag or
disk scan. I took some advice and did a defrag in safe
mode after that I was able to system restore again. I had
tried after that to get the Windows Update it had searched
and found the updates, I had it downloading and my
computer froze,I had to restart my computer. I tried to go
back to Windows Update and it's been doing it ever since.
I have just recently done a system restore and have been
seeing improvements in alot of areas.

Are you using Norton Antivirus, Norton System Works, or Norton
Internet Security ? If the answer is yes then it is more than likely
that System Restore has become corrupted/damaged and since the
system can longer create a viable Retore Point then you can't update.

Let's try this first - Follow the steps for Win ME here :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585

For the " Remove the Windows Update ActiveX controls " heading the
iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll files will be located in the
WINDOWS\System folder . Also, delete the software control (ActiveX)
installed in WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files by right clicking it
and choosing Remove .
Download the controls from
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/ansi/iuctl.cab
and save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the
steps below:
1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.

2. Click "Extract to."

3. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."

4. Go to the location you selected and right click on the iuctl.inf
file.

5. Click "Install."

With your antivirus program still temporarily disabled, try Windows
Update.
