When you try to print from MS-DOS mode, a Command Prompt or from an MS-DOS-based
program you may be unable to access a USB-connected printer. USB printers may have
proprietary port designations that do not use standard LPT or PRN port settings.
Connect the printer with a standard parallel port, if equipped, or contact the
printer manufacturer for an emulation driver, if available.

There is a full featured USB driver for your printer on the HP site, you might want
to try it...

Have a look at Printfil. It allows character based apps. (like DOS) to print
to Windows printers (including USB).
