View Full Version : Printer Problem

I trying to find this out. The computer can’t remember that the
printers are installed?

It does show up in the printer control pannel.

The programs all of sudden don't recognize a printer is installed.

Notepad. Wordpad. Ms word, Excel, access., E.t.c.

The Only fix if I change the ports on the printers. Then put them
back on the correct ports. I just want a fix. So, I don’t have to
fix this person computer every day. Yes, I have permission to work on
this computer. Yes, I have done virus scans. No Virus.

Greg R

The printers are
IKON Copier
HP Desktop Jet 10??

Well I'm not a pro at this. But would imagine if you went
to Control Panel and opened printers. You may have to set
one or the other to Default Printer.
The last time I had a simular problem was a bad solder
joint on the LPT port to the MB.
What does Device Manager say about the printers?

Greg, I simply don't quite understand the problem. Can you spell it out in
orderly detail? So far, what I *think* you're saying is that the machine has
two printers installed, but that one or the other or both are not being
recognized on occasion?

Besides make/model (and neither of those you list sounds right--please check
again for full make/model info) how are these printers connected to the
machine?

Yes both are not being recognized on occasion.

There is an option in xp to tell xp to search for printers
automatically. Is there a way to do that with 98se?

I know the hp is hooked up through lpt port. However, I not sure how
the ikon is hooked up.
Ikon shows something like this
//aaxx300e1234///

I bet it on a serial connections and have a com conflict with the
modem or It not sharing correctly.

If it is ikon. She can get them to fix it that. I have her ask ikon
to check the cable to the copier.

The two computers and the ikon copier are hooked together.
The hp printer is not.

Ikon could of set it up wrong.

Oh, now it's *two* computers? I'm sorry, Greg. You haven't fully answered my
questions, and I simply cannot make head nor tails of your description of
the issue. Better luck next time, but quite frankly this issue is too
complicated to be dealing with it third-hand--especially when the go-between
simply doesn't have or can't communicate the requisite details.

(I'm betting the Ikon is a network printer, either hooked up to the other
computer or possessing a server of its own.)

Ok, I'll give it a go. Let's see if we have this straight.

1-HP DJ printer not connected to network.
1-Ikon copier connected to network.

First answer these simple questions and we'll see if we can't get this resolved.
Forget about the HP for now and let's focus on the Ikon.

What are the OS's of each machine that the Ikon is shared too?

How are the machines connected to the network? Are they connected to each other or
via a router,switch or hub?

How is the Ikon connected to the network? Is it connected to a machine, router,
switch or hub?

What type of cable is used to connect the Ikon to the network? Serial, Parallel,
Crossover or Straight Thru?

What is the shared name of the Ikon? If it is /aaxx300e1234, then this may be where
the problem is. IIRC you can only use up to 10 characters in a name.

I think this to me sound like it ikons fault. Not hooking up the
cables correctly. I was just trying to see if this was a simple fix.
I guess this is a major fix. So I will tell her to get a beter
computer tech, to check it out. It a work place that does not like
to spend money. I am excellent with computer configurations.
Networking I am not. I learned a little about networking but not
enough.

Thank you all for you help anyway.

From personal experience?
I have not seen a copier yet that works well on a
network. Common Printer? Yes. Common Copier? No.
Most places use the copier as a stand alone machine.
Other than reconfiguring the whole system for just one
piece of hardware.
But I am sure "Ikon" says differant.
If I made a CD-Burner and claimed it could burn 100gigs
in 5 seconds. And you tell it won't. I would swear the
problem was on your end and not my products fault.

If it's only a copier and not a multifunction, than it makes no sense whatsoever to
add it to a network. Hmmm, let's see now, I have this nice looking document I want to
copy, I think I'll dash across the room, out the door, down the hallway, up three
flights of stairs, down the hallway, around the corner, down the hallway, thru the
door, across the room, place the document in the copier, go back across the room, out
the door, up the hallway, around the corner, up the hallway, down three flights of
stairs, up the hallway, across the room and click on copy. Now let's go thru that
again to retrieve the document, only this time I'm going to stop to talk to that
great looking receptionist and a bladder relief break on the way.
You say "that's pretty extreme!" Ok, let's put it in the same room, you still have
to go to the copier and return to your machine to copy which is purely unproductive
and a waste of time and money.

Awwww... Let's *assume* that it's a multi-function machine--that it can
copy, scan and print, at least, <bg>.

Ok, but it's in a separate building a mile away for copy/scan purposes. <BSEG>

Once you get the info for all of those " This is what I got to find out." answers,
post back. Better yet, post to microsoft.public.win98.networking, get any and all
information before posting because "This is what I got to find out." won't go far.

Hey, if it's a scanner capable of being loaded with 500 or a thousand or
more pages, it's great for converting paper to PDF, etc.! Wouldn't want that
machine grinding away right next to me anyway! Make that cute receptionist
go over and reload it when necessary.

"Brian A."

Read my post.
I said I know very little about networking, excellent with computer
configuration.

I thought it would say something simple like a registry tweak.

I am going to have her reboot the computer, when this happens again.

Here a rough drawings how each computer is hooked up.
connections are not known.

computer 1
[=]=====LPT port======Hp Printer
[=]=====Unknown port======Copier

Computer 2
[=]=====LPT port==========Hp Printer
[=]=====Unknown port======Copier

Computer 1 & 2 are networked together using a network card.
These computers are old Compaq’s

I think the connections get disabled when computer 1 shutdown and
computer 2 stays on.

I would like to thank you and Gary for trying to help. I will just
leave it up to a computer tech.

However, If I find a Solution. I will create a new post.
