View Full Version : Aborted install of Adaptec USB2/Firewire AUA-3020 card breaks my Win 98

I attempted to install an Adaptec AUA-3020 card (USB2/Firewire) on my
Win98 (apparently not SE!) and now can't boot into Windows.

(Win98 doesn't support USB2. Win98SE does. I optimistically thought a
fully updated Win98 would be the equivalent of Win98SE, but apparently
not.)

I've removed the card but still can't boot: I get my desktop
background and mouse pointer, but no icons or control panel.

I'm told I've goofed up my interrupts, but I have no idea how to
ungoof them.

I can boot into safe mode.

I have tried:

--running "scanreg /restore" from the DOS prompt, but that doesn't fix
things.

--setting BIOS to: PnP OS = No

--disabling USB in BIOS

--disabling USB in Windows

--Resetting resource assignments in BIOS

I can also boot from a Knoppix CD (Linux) and access the net (which is
what I am doing right now). Linux is nice, but I hate to give up
Windows for such a stupid reason.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

John
