View Full Version : Sound card configuration

I've spent a decent amount of time searching through newsgroups and can't
seem to find the exact answer to my question so I'll post. Hopefully this is
the right group!

I have an MAudio card I added to my Compaq Presario 6000. I want to hook up
a microphone (3.5mm) that does not fit into the MAudio (rca). The sound card
that came with the computer does have the jack I need, I don't want to buy a
pre-amp for the mic, and I'd like to be able to switch between the two sound
cards-- I do not need them to be simulataneously activated.

My problem is that I **think** I know what soundcard Compaq put into my
computer but I don't see it in the list of drivers anymore. Before I start
fiddling with my current configuration (trying to manually install drivers,
etc), I want to see if anyone could shed any light as to what could have
happened to the drivers. Does the fact that they don't exist (and I didn't
delete them) mean that the two soundcards are set up such that I won't be
able to programmatically switch between the two?

Thanks for your assistance!

How do you know that they don't exist if you don't know what they are.
Your new sound card isn't going to want to use them, or if it is
already assigned to them because they had been the drivers for the
previous sound card, there is no reason to think they will work with a
different sound card. Is there?

This question is so far beyond my knowledge, I don't know how to
express it. And I have no expericence with Maudio, or your
microphone, or Compaq (except to say that Compaq used to use and
probably still does some proprietary software and hardware).

I've never seen a sound card with an RCA jack, certainly not one with
only an RCA jack. But I have only seen about 10 or 30 different
cards. I've never seen a mike with an RCA plug either.

But just guessing, didn't Maudio card come with a CD for software
installation? Have you looked at the maudio website to see if they
are there. I don't think there is a problem installing more drivers
than one is using. And** I think you can use one of the setting in
the Device Manager from the System icon in CP, the one that says
"disable in this profile", to disable one sound card in one profile
and one in the other. I've never set up profiles and I don't know
what they are associated with, maybe your userid when you log into
your Windows, as for a father and son.

**If you can't run them simultaneously, which seems likely because
unlike Modems in the CP, I've not seen a screen where you can choose
which sound card you are using.

I made this short, so post back if you want to talk about it.

Meirman, Thanks for your assistance! I actually just went out and bought a
USB mic instead-- that did the trick.
