dear sirs/madams,

whenever i start my windows 98 an error
message pops up that there is some error in the system
file mmtask.tsk ( multimedia background task support file)
and the system automatically shuts down after showing an
illegal operation message . i have to ignore the mmtask
error and close the illegal operation dialog box four or
five times to get access to windows. so i wanted to know
if the file mmtask.tsk can be deleted to overcome this
problem or perhaps there is an alternative to this problem.
and perhaps you can tell me if this is an isolated problem
or anything general.

Never delete *anything*, except maybe viruses that are not attached to
system files.

Rename the file to mmtask.bkp or mmtask.tsk.backup or develop your own
naming system. Then see what happens. And you can always rename it
to the original later.

I have the file. It's 1184 bytes and it hasn't been updated since May
11, 1998, at 8:01PM. That is, never. I use Real a lot and MP some
and winamp quite a bit. If your file has changed, it might be bad, but
don't delete it until you get another copy and have everything
working.

If your file hasn't hcanged, then, despite the message, it might not
be the problem. Although a virus could certainly change the file
while keeping the length the same and resetting the date and time back
to the original date and time. That's another reason not to delete
the file. Even if the size and date are the same, if you need
someone to send you the original file and he does, you want to run
fc.exe to compare your version to the version someone sends you, to
see if your file had been changed or not. Otherwise you may think you
replaced the file, but the replacement is exactly like what you had.

I know nothing about this particular problem, but I suppose it could
be a virus and you should update your virus definitions and then scan
your harddrive.

If mmtask.tsk was updated by some normal software installation, there
is a utility built in to win98 that will enable you to go back to the
previous version, while renaming and saving your current version. If
you ask, I'll find out what it is called. I've looked at it but I
forget now. But it's not used much, and on the newsgroup that deals
with this, it doesn't get any recommendations.

But you don't even know if your file has been updated yet.

Given the fact that MS programs can crash, which no program should
ever do, I would not assume that an error message that points to this
file is actually pointing to the right place.

You should also take a unique phrase within the error message and
search for it on the web, and also in groups.google.com . You really
should have posted the exact error message here, ftm, but when you
search you have to use it.

BTW, it's supposed to be in C:\windows\system in win98.
