Right click on a blank area of desktop, select properties.
Using background tab, scroll to the item you wish to erase.

Highlight the item with a single left mouse click.
Select the "Browse" radio button on the left side of the page.
You may have to use a bottom 'slider bar' to find the icon you wish to eliminate.
Right click on the icon and select 'delete' from the listings shown.

It will probably be placed in the recylce bin first so you can make some recoveries from there untill you empty the bin.
